THE MEN'S WEDDING RING GUIDE
The plain gold band is one option, not the only one. Here's what modern men are actually choosing — materials, finishes, and the personal details most jewellers never mention.
Beyond The Plain Band
For decades, a men's wedding ring meant one thing: a plain gold or platinum band, chosen quickly and rarely revisited. That's no longer the limit. The same craft and materials used in fine jewellery — solid gold, platinum, mixed metals, custom engraving — are just as available for men's rings as they are for any other piece. The only real constraint left is knowing what's possible before you walk into a showroom with a plain band already decided.
Materials Worth Considering
- ► 18k or 24k gold — yellow, white, or rose, chosen for tone and durability
- ► Platinum — denser and heavier, develops a natural patina over decades
- ► Titanium and tungsten — lightweight, scratch-resistant, a more industrial look
- ► Mixed metals and inlays — wood, carbon fibre, or meteorite banding for something no one else is wearing
Finishes & Textures
- ► Brushed or matte — understated, doesn't show scratches from daily wear
- ► Hammered — organic, irregular texture with real depth under light
- ► Sandblasted — a modern, fine-grain matte finish
- ► Two-tone — combining two metals for contrast without being loud
Fit Matters More Than People Think
A ring that looks right in a display case can still feel wrong worn every day. Comfort-fit interior profiles round the inside edge so the ring slides on and off easily and doesn't dig in. Width matters too — narrower bands suit fine motor work and gym grip better than wide, heavy profiles, which can feel bulky under gloves or with barbells. If your work is manual or your hands change size with activity or seasons, this is worth discussing before you commit to a design, not after.
Making It Personal
- ► Hidden engraving on the inside of the band — a date, initials, or a private message
- ► Fingerprint or heartbeat engraving, cast directly from a real impression
- ► Subtle gemstone or birthstone accents, set flush so they don't catch on daily wear
- ► Textured patterns unique to your own design, not picked off a shelf
